“Not Ready to Make Nice”

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

(The Dixie Chicks)

Not a big fan of the music itself as a matter of taste (I’m more into Sigur Rs) but definitely a fan of their political stand. I was a little bummed about Natalie Maines’s apology, since I felt she didn’t owe one, but their latest CD makes up for that I think.

They’re still sore because people aren’t buying their music like they used to. Freedom of speech means the Government can’t persecute them for what they say. Unfortunately, that freedom doesn’t extend to the populace — people are free to not financially support them if they don’t like what Maines says. Kind of like John Rocker — he’s free to say what he likes but doesn’t mean the fans or employers will approve and keep paying him.

Interesting point Harry. Indeed, I actually just ordered the new CD, not because I like their music necessarily (see above Bob post. I also am more european electronica, more Goldfrapp in music enjoyment), but because I support them politically. Worth every penny of my 15$, even if I never listen to the dang thing, just to support someone in the arts that I believe in.

The question Bob, will you buy tickets to their concerts? The Dixie Chicks have not sold out a US concert since Maines statements. I happen to disagree with the president about Iraqi events but could never claim shame about shared former residence. Yes, I once lived in Texas and grew up with VP Cheney’s daughters.

Maines blew it in the way she stated opinion – and continues to do so very time she opens her mouth. Which makes me wonder who is really writing the lyrics she claims.

JUST APPRECIATE THE MUSIC WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT THE MAINES INCIDENT , IF I DECIDE TO BUY THE CD MAINES HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THE SINGLE DEBUTED #1 THIS WEEK I DONT THINK PEOPLE ASK MAINES IF TI SHOULD HAPPEN OR NOT. THE SE CHICKS ARE DIXIE. HATE IT OR LOVE IT. TO ALL THE HATERS IAM NOT READY TO MAKE NICE LOLOOL

I’m not normally a fan of country music, but I do like this song.

Years from now, after we’ve recovered from the debacle in Iraq that Bush has perpetrated, this still will be a good song.

    Isn’t:
I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
    I’m still mad as hell

    standard country?

I don’t know if sharon is right that they haven’t had sold-out concerts since Natalie’s statements (I thought they had), but if sharon’s right it shows the Dixie Chicks’ character in sticking to what they believe instead of caving in to pressure from the right-wing.

I personally love the dixie chicks….I find thier music very realistic….I am canadian, and I would lay a month’s worth of paychecks on the line that if they preformed in Canada, they would sell out every show. If the average joe made the comment that Maines made, no one would have said a word. By being someone famous, well that stone could not be left unturned. We would love to have you in Canada girls…….bring it on……and keep up the good work…. 🙂

Music speaks for people in ordinary situations when they cannot find the words themselves to express feelings, either in politcs, the work place or personal relationships. I wouldn’t class myself as a Country fan but the body of words here fully covers the depth of hurt i have recently felt and for that alone this song will stand the test of time.

On a political level, i took an active part in the first Gulf War and we all knew that it wasn’t over in March 1991. Once Bush Junior was in office it was inevitable that he would finish his fathers work there but there is a feeling of dishonesty about all the reasons given this time around and if public figures are made to pay a higher price for saying what a lot of people are thinking, then perhaps there is something wrong with that.

If anyone purchases a music record because of the artist(s) political point of view, then I’m embarassed for all of you that have. Nothing upsets me more then seeing someone care what some left or right-wing musician or actor says. One of my favorite quotes by a singer whom I will call Bob said, “If you want to know how I feel about any political matter, then your asking me the wrong questions. I make music, not political statements. Thanks…” That’s the way it should be. I could care less what the Dixie Chicks think about what our government is doing. They may have the right to say whatever it is they want and God knows the soldiers whose cause they don’t support are out there right now protecting them to have that right. But don’t sit here and sass me that their opinions matter squat. However, if they want to keep biting the hand that feeds them they sure as hell can keep doing it, I like that just fine.

Lyrically, this song seems rather dull. I don’t listen to country music, I prefer soft rock. This song may be more poetic with the crowd that enjoys country, I don’t know. It only hints of tragedy, about “paying a price”, and reads rather introspectively.
I’m sure the Dixie Chicks won’t need to get day-jobs anytime soon, they are very accomplished in the industry. They would have to try a new dialect if they want to raise political awareness and keep their artistic integrity.

  11. Lucky

Their album sold over 500,000 copies in the first week and is number one again this week, so to say that they are not selling is not true. The Dixie Chicks were and still remain one of the few country acts that i like.

  12. Fooleo

this is a frickin awsome song and those of you think the dixie chicks are stupid for bashin our dumb president ya’ll can just go to hell yourself.

  13. luvchicks

Screw the US tour. They will be making a killing if they went overseas. The whole world ‘except for a few crony nations’ hates US for its Bushism now.

  14. gordon walker

They are going down a bundle in the UK right now supporting The Eagles but they only have a few dates. They appeared on the Jools Holland ‘Later’ programme on BBC 2 on Friday night and did three numbers from the new album but interestingley not the current hit (which is No 1 in the UK as well) The music was tight and together and the political thing is probably still quite intersting to the Brits becuase i doubt we would get excited enough aboiut any UK artist that held or voiced similar views, in fact, we would almost expect it!

  15. Caity Danielle

I do like this song. However, I don’t think it’s right to bash our President. Even though some may not support him, there isn’t a single person who if put in office would be supported by everyone. Instead of calling him “dumb” and criticizing him, maybe you should actually talk to a U.S. soldier and see if they think their trip to Iraq was worth helping the people over there… I think you’ll find they are very proud of what they did over there…as they should be…

  16. Melissa

I love the song. And in reply to Gordon I have talk to a few soldiers that are not at all in favor of the war in Iraq but they do it because it is their civil duty to be there and they really have no choice any longer. If you heard some of the attrocities that go on there you would think twice…

  17. ANNOYED

First of all, everyone needs to chill the hell out. For christ sake, so someone famous made a political comment that you all dont agree with. Just like someone else stated, “if an average joe said this, than no one would give a damn.” Get over it. I’m not exactly a huge fan of country, but these girls have left their mark in showbiz, with or without Maines statement. I say you all need to grow some thicker skin, and not turn into babies the second someone says something you dont agree with. hmm I don’t hear the president bitching everytime someone disagrees with him. Freedom of speech, Maines was titled to her own opinion. oh and in response to Gordon saying that it’s not right to bash our president, that sounds nice and all but you’re forgetting that little thing called Freedom of speech. If someone disagrees with the president than go ahead and say what you wish it’s your opinion, doesn’t mean we all have to agree. It’s life, deal.

  18. Annalise

Canada loves the Chicks! Their shows always sell out up here, so girls come to Canada. We think you’re awesome, keep doing what you’re doing! (I too would lay down a months worth of salary to see a concert!)

  19. Rationale

I have always been a fan of the Dixie Chicks, though I am not a country fan per se. There are only a few country performers I listen to somewhate regularly.

That being said, I think Natalie Maines has the right to say what she wants when she wants. Personally I think her only mistake was saying it in front of thousands, possibly millions of people. That is just asking for trouble.

People have the right to say whatever they wish. There are certain people in this country (USA) that take offense at words. They are obviously not adult enough to comprehend that words alone do not injure unless you are weak minded enough to let them. The United States was founded on the premise that people had the right to voice their opinion, be it bad or good. People are being villafied now for speaking their mind if it is different than the majority and that just makes me sick.

all you fucking liberal hippy scum bagg who think and say that “hes not my president” you are all so oblivious to what is really going on in the world u have no point and no legitimate argument and you are a shame to this country and the dixie chicks suck ass

  21. micala

not a real country music fan prefer rock
i liked the chicks nusic before the bush comment still do –is maines any different than other entertainers who spout their opinions pro or against administration ? why has she garnered so much hate ? its the ole martha stewart thing
strong women are resented –even by other women by the way i support all the brave men and women fighting in iraq –i dont support the administrations policies and bush is not alone in
    this exercise in futility

Just my thought for those that don’t like Country grow up. I feel sorry for you if rock or what ever gets you going. I was that way at one time because it was cool and the thing to do.
But the music sucks at best a bunch of drugies trying to hold a real lyric.
Country is the real America music. It has a true message from the song writer and artist that is usually more whole-some than rap or rock.

As far as the Dixie Chicks go they are all but done with country fans.
Their CD “Taking the long Way” is exactly that.
The song is beautiful “I’m not ready to play nice”
If you Blue state people don’t buy it they have a flop.
I don’t listen to Lou Dobbs on CNN, Surprised?
And the only song of Dixie Chicks album I will every here is the song above.
I ride an atv and hunt and hate tree huggers and environmentalist.
The spotted owl should only be a memory of buckshot spotted all over it.
I vote Republican and my children do also. I support the war in Iraq and think Bush is doing a great job.

Why would you care if people purchase music based on the words in their music? Hello???? why don’t you appreicate your freedom of expression in America? Good God..are American’s growing that boring and expressionless? You surely are.

I have always appreciated the Dixie Chicks music and find it amazing that all of you out there are angry at them and don’t see how pathetic you are. Their artists for Godsake. If you don’t like their music…fine…if you do…good for you.

You shallow Americans..very disappointing when I so look up to your culture.

  25. rebecca

I am a canadian, not a huge fan of country music, but i do think that this song shows that not all americans are ignorant to the devistation George Bush is causing for the world as a whole, not only his own country. I fully disagree with the way George is conducting himself as president. I have relatives that live in the USA and its almost like they are brain washed. In my opinion we are dealing with another Hitler, what the USA is doing is genocide and its not right.

  26. Anna

I really like the song, and don’t give a damn if it’s about what Maines said. It’s still a good song. I actually, in a way, fits a current situation I’m in. The CD is awesome!

What does this song stand for?? what do the lyrics mean?? because to me they describe the way i feel about my mum leaving my dad.??

Please shed some light?? is this song totally political?

The Dixie Chicks were never one of my favorite groups but after making the statement about their president while performing in a foreign country they totally fell off the table. Natalie was always the fat little mouthy one of the group and she didn’t think disparaging her country or its leader in front of a crowd of foreigners would bit her in her ample ass and it did. Maybe she, like all entertainers, should just shut the hell up and practice their professions and stop trying to tell us what to think or thinking that we give a damn about what they think off the stage.

Maybe Maines should have been a world leader instead of a pseudo-intellectual skirt behind a microphone. I am sure a woman of her obvious intellectual might can find employment in either the cleaning or food service industries.

*Thank you, Bill Murray for that wonderful line!

  29. Sarah

Kevin, I’m sure you feel the same way about conservative celebrities, right? It doesn’t make a difference where Natalie said what she did – free speech is an international right that all democratic countries uphold. Believe me, she’s not the only individual who is intelligent enough to observe the mess President Bush and his team has caused for the world community.

Sorry Kevin, but I am not obligated to like my leaders or their policies.

But it is so good to see you are a freethinker, seeing that you have stolen a line from a celebrity and made it your own.

I really enjoy the like the dixie chicks
Especially their single Landslide which was released in 2003. I loved it then.

  31. peoplethesedays...

    Ok…
As it has been stated so many times before…we live in America where “freedom” is so often used in the government. Having Freedom of this and freedom of that and so on, yet the very first time a celebrity goes out of their way to express their freedom of speech they instantly get bashed on.

Who cares what they said about the president…everyone has their own oppinion.
The only skeptic thing that should determine weather
or not they are listened to is each listeners oppinion on
    their artistic music ability….

I’m mean come on, in our every day life, we have people of all sorts walking amongst us and there are so many that have such a strong ability to do one specific thing. And hell, lets face it… the Dixie Chicks are amazing and I’m not saying I agree or disagree with what they said, but they had every right to say it…

If you hate their MUSIC well thats just dandy…
If you USED to enjoy their music but boycotted after the Freedom of Speech situation, then yes I do agree..you need to grow up and honestly I don’t care if you say it’s the “principle” of it,
because the only principle is that they have the freedom to say what they want and frankly i agree with the statement said many times before: if any everyday person would have said what maine said they would have been given a funny look and life would have gone on…but no one celebrity and the world makes ruckus out of it….
If you liked their music then and do to this very day weather you agreed or disagreed with what they had to say.. then you are what America should be about.

One of my friends was completly against what they had said, I made them listen to one of the Dixie Chicks songs and every since that day the Dixie Chicks have been her favorite musical artists.

The statement shouldn’t determine weather you listen to them or not.

    period.
    the end.

  32. DG

I wish these chicks would stick to what they know, which is music. I think their comments were inappropriate. They are singers, not politicians. I would love to hear anything they have to say about subjects that pertain to their profession. Otherwise, I do not find their comments newsworthy. Unfortunately, the inappropriate, rude, ignorant behavior they have displayed since the incident have turned a lot of former fans (including me) off and it has hurt their pocket books.

  33. Jeff

Plain and simple – what Natalie said was WRONG!! regardless of your political views – when you country is going to war and people are dying – you may not slam the president on stage!! Natalie, we love you voice and your songs, but please stop telling me how to think!! I do love teh “Shut up And Sing” – great song – great words – but honey, when people are shooting at you – the last thing you want to hear is someone telling you that your big boss is wrong!! Look at it from my point of view!! I have to Shut Up And Shoot!!!
